Sometimes at big law firms it is not so much survival of the fittest as survival of the piss-artist. A willingness to spend time taking clients out for drinks, dinners, and golf weekends can be richly rewarded. Being an excellent lawyer is certainly advisable but by no means necessary. After all, once you make partner you can always get someone else to do the dirty work. But when it comes to making partner in the first place - it's clients that count, not your skills at legalese.
